Migration Safari (Calving Season – Ndutu)
From December to March, the migration gathers in the southern Serengeti and the Ndutu area, part of the greater Ngorongoro Conservation Area ecosystem.
This is known as calving season — when nearly 8,000 wildebeest calves are born each day at the peak of the season.
What Makes Calving Season Special?
- Thousands of newborn wildebeest within weeks
- High predator concentration (lions, cheetahs, hyenas)
- Dramatic hunting action
- Beautiful green landscapes during the rainy season
- Excellent photography opportunities
The Ndutu plains offer open terrain, making it easier to spot wildlife and observe interactions.
Best for: Wildlife photographers, predator lovers, and travelers who enjoy intense wildlife drama.
Mara River Crossing Safari
Between July and October, the migration moves north toward the Mara River in northern Serengeti.
The Mara River crossings are the most iconic and dramatic moments of the entire migration. Wildebeest gather in massive numbers before making the dangerous plunge into crocodile-infested waters.
What to Expect During River Crossing Season
- Massive herds building up near riverbanks
- Sudden, explosive river crossings
- Nile crocodiles waiting in ambush
- Big cats hunting near crossing points
- Thrilling, unpredictable wildlife action
The best viewing areas are in Northern Serengeti near Kogatende, close to the border with the Maasai Mara National Reserve.
Best for: Adventure seekers and travelers who want to witness one of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles.
