Shira Plateau

Location and Elevation: The Shira Plateau is situated on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is at an elevation of approximately 3,800 meters (12,500 feet) above sea level.

Formation: The plateau is one of Kilimanjaro’s three volcanic cones, alongside Kibo and Mawenzi. It was formed by volcanic activity, and is essentially the remnants of the oldest of Kilimanjaro’s volcanic peaks.

Trekking Route: The Shira Plateau is a key part of the Shira Route and the Lemosho Route, two popular trekking paths that climbers use to ascend Mount Kilimanjaro. These routes are known for their scenic views and less crowded trails compared to other routes.

Flora and Fauna: The plateau is home to diverse ecosystems, with unique flora and fauna. It features alpine meadows, heathlands, and moorlands. Hikers might encounter various plant species adapted to the high-altitude environment, as well as wildlife such as elands, buffaloes, and occasionally elephants.

Scenic Views: The plateau offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, including the Western Breach, a dramatic cliff on the Kibo cone, and the expansive plains of the Shira Ridge. It provides a relatively flat terrain, which makes for a pleasant acclimatization day during the climb.

Cultural Significance: Like much of Kilimanjaro, the Shira Plateau holds cultural and spiritual significance for the local Chagga people and other indigenous groups. The mountain is often considered sacred.
