Tarangire National Park

The kingdom of Elephants

Tarangire Safari

Tarangire National Park is a scenic wildlife haven in northern Tanzania, covering about 2,850 km² and forming part of the famous northern safari circuit alongside Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater, and the Serengeti. It’s defined by ancient baobab trees, rolling savanna plains, seasonal swamps, and the life-giving Tarangire River, which draws abundant wildlife — especially in the dry season.

Located roughly 118 km southwest of Arusha, it’s easily accessible by road (about 2–2.5 hours), making it a perfect first stop or standalone safari destination.

Wildlife Highlights

Tarangire is home to elephants, lions, and over 550 bird species, making it a paradise for wildlife lovers.

One of the main attractions of Tarangire is its incredible wildlife. The park is home to over 3,000 elephants, making it one of the best places in Tanzania to see these gentle giants. Additionally, you can spot lions, leopards, zebras, giraffes, and various antelopes. Tarangire is also known for its tree-climbing lions, a rare and fascinating behavior that adds to the park’s allure.

For bird enthusiasts, Tarangire is a paradise. With over 550 bird species, it offers endless opportunities to spot unique and colorful birds. Look out for the kori bustard, the world’s heaviest flying bird, or the vibrant yellow-collared lovebirds, which are commonly seen in the park.
