6 Days Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climb
Overview
Climb Africa’s highest peak via the scenic and adventurous Machame Route on Mount Kilimanjaro. Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame offers dramatic landscapes, excellent acclimatization, and one of the highest summit success rates on the mountain. This 6-day itinerary is perfect for fit trekkers seeking a rewarding challenge with unforgettable views.
Day-by-Day
Day 1: Machame Gate → Machame Camp
Your adventure begins at Machame Gate after registration with Kilimanjaro National Park authorities. Trek through lush rainforest filled with colobus monkeys and exotic birds. The trail is well-defined but can be muddy. Arrive at Machame Camp for dinner and overnight.
⛺ Overnight: Machame Camp
Day 2: Machame Camp → Shira Camp
Leave the rainforest behind and enter the heather and moorland zone. The landscape opens dramatically with views of the Shira Plateau and Kibo Peak. The trail becomes steeper but manageable.
⛺ Overnight: Shira Camp
Day 3: Shira Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp
This is a key acclimatization day. Hike to Lava Tower (4,630m) for altitude exposure, then descend to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy significantly improves summit success.
You’ll enjoy incredible views of the iconic Barranco Wall.
⛺ Overnight: Barranco Camp
Day 4: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp
Start the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall — a thrilling but non-technical scramble. After reaching the top, traverse valleys and ridges toward Karanga Camp. This is a shorter trekking day allowing for rest and acclimatization.
⛺ Overnight: Karanga Camp
Day 5: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp
A steady ascent leads to Barafu Camp, your base for summit night. Rest, hydrate, and prepare your gear for the midnight summit attempt.
Early dinner and sleep before midnight wake-up.
⛺ Overnight: Barafu Camp
Day 6: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp
Around midnight, begin your summit push under the stars. After a challenging ascent, reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point in Africa and the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Celebrate your achievement as the sun rises above the clouds. Descend to Barafu Camp for rest, then continue to Mweka Camp.
⛺ Overnight: Mweka Camp
